Chas. A. Stevens store records, part 1, 1890-1959.

Records for Chas. A. Stevens Department Store (Chicago, Ill.) include company charter, minutes, notes for talks and lectures and misc. items, 1865-1979. Also included are the records of the American Silk Company that include their operating license and company minutes, 1902-1910. Collection includes oversize photocopies of clippings, many from a 1931-1932 scrapbook, about the Stevens stores and other retailers of women's clothing in the Chicago area.

Stevens began in 1886 as Chas. A. Stevens & Bros. In Dec. 1932, Charles A. Stevens died. Beginning in 1933, the store was called Chas. A. Stevens & Co. Eventually it included a main store on State Street in Chicago plus other city and suburban stores. During the 1940s-1960s, it was a fashion leader in women's clothing in Chicago.
